Iron Information
IRON is an important naturally
occurring mineral for your body to function normally.
Iron Body Functions:
- Red blood cell
production
- Stress resistance
Iron Uses:
- Alcoholism
- Anemia
- Heavy periods
Your doctor may suspect you have a deficiency by your symptoms and
medical history. A blood iron level and red blood cell count
will show whether you're deficient or not. Red blood cells which are
not getting enough iron look smaller than normal and pale.
Women of reproductive age are most at risk of Iron deficiency if
they have heavy periods - the iron is lost in the
blood. Alcoholics and drug addicts because of a poor diet are also
prone to deficiency.
Treatment is to add iron to your diet through careful meal planning
or iron supplement tablets.
The US RDA for Iron is 18 mg per day.
